W. Bradley's Story

College I visited SIU Carbondale during a Foreign Language day my freshman year in H.S. and never visited another campus; I'd found where I wanted to be. After having visited over 100 campuses across the U.S. and Canada since then, SIU-C remains unique. Nothing will ever compare to it's quaint hominess and the fond memories of those 4 years. I was more sad the day I graduated than I've ever been in my life - I knew that I'd finished the last word in a chapter of my life that could never be rewritten or revisited. The experiences enjoyed there have never been repeated or replaced in the 17 years since I left. Oddly, with all the things that I accomplished and experienced there, and I took advantage of everything collegiate life had to offer, I never felt totally satisified that I'd complete all that I had set out ...Expand for more
to do. So many opportunities were at my fingertips...if I'd only had more fingers! When I went back for my two Masters Degrees at Florida State in Tallahassee, I realized and endured one of the great truisms: you can never go back. Being older, having worked, traveled, and grown up (somewhat), I found that collegiate life was for collegians...particularly the younger variety that were still experimenting with their place in society, challenging traditions and accepted norms, reveling in their newfound role as free and independent bodies, and enjoying their first bite of the forbidden apple. Like indentured servants suddenly freed, this era in a young life is free from care and just happy to be there. Not that the last 17 have been down hill, but those 4 remain at the forefront of a storehouse of recollections.
